Our Trip Bruce and I had a wonderful trip overseas and so we missed Sydney Royal for the first time in 43 years. Lindy and our clients were there however to keep the flag flying. Bruce and I visited on the first day of the Show for sentimental reasons and to wish the crew good luck. The trip, proposed by our friends, the Fredericks of Perth, came at just the right time as I had been sick for three months and needed to get away. I am happy to say I am much more like my old self again. The trip was a horseman's dream. We stayed with Clayton Fredericks, where from my bed, I could look out through a big window at the horses training in the early morning. We visited Lexington in Kentucky for the Rolex Horse Trials, which Australian Andrew Hoy won. Bruce and I are pictured at right with Phillip Dutton walking the Cross Country Course. Phillip, who has won this event previously, hails from Nyngan and now resides in the USA - but he always rides for Australia. We then returned to England for the Badminton Horse Trials where Clayton competed. There we met up with lots of Australians. Finally we attended Royal Windsor Horse Show and saw the Queen up close! For more details of our trip, see the Winter 2006 Newsletter. Sydney Royal Lindy had a good band of helpers at Sydney, which was just as well with Keeley just 12 months old and Luke, at 2½ years old, who became a little too adventurous at times. Congratulations to: P Jared Ashbrooke P who won his Riding Class and to Ben Maytom, who came second. Jared went on to win Reserve Champion Boy Rider. P Brooke Higgins P won 1st in her Girl Rider, 1st in the Turnout and with her mother, Therese, who is no stranger to Royal Show wins, won the Parent and Child. Brooke went on to win Champion Girl Rider with Jody Maytom Reserve Champion. P Nell Evans P who is riding her hack, Marena Memories, in open company, was 3rd in the Open Hack and 1st in the Child's Hack and runner-up in the Crane Trophy. It was the 6th time this beautiful mare has won that placing in this prestigious event. Nell also won 2nd in the Turnout Class. P Marena Fanfare P , our pure white galloway, continued his winning run. He won the Show Hunter Class and went on to be Reserve Champion Show Hunter Galloway. This follows his Champion at Canberra Royal. See more results in the Winter 2006 Newsletter.
The Marfleet family, Amanda, Freddy and Kate are going to return to England to live. Whilst we were in England we accompanied them to see the property there that they propose to buy. It is a lovely and historic house set in a lovely garden with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Amanda bought one of Marena Amber Folly's foals, Marena Trade Winds (pictured at left), one of the last Sun Puff (imp) foals at our auction in January. Due to their departure to England he has been sold to a lady in Murrurundi. He is here at the stud for specialised training before he moves north to his new 9 year old rider. Marena Concerto has been sold by Trudi Jones of Victoria to Sheila Bryant who is thrilled with the pony and took her off to Pony Club as soon as she arrived.
Agistment We have reduced our horse breeding numbers as planned so now we have room to take more agisted horses in our lush paddocks. We have rates available for Paddock only, Paddock with 1 hard feed per day and Paddock with 2 hard feeds per day. Our stable care agistment is also available, where the horses are cared for and prepared to the same standard as our own show horses. Ring us with your needs and we will do our best to help you in the way that you want. Our special care is extended to your old favourites, here they may spend a leisurely retirement in our peaceful surroundings. We also provide care for injured horses or those recovering from injury.
The Future Yes, the End of an Era has come for Bruce and I, but a new exciting one is beginning for Lindy Walker Johnson and her children, Luke who will be 3 years in June and Keeley who had her first birthday on 27/4/06. Lindy will carry on the Marena tradition. We will breed less horses, about 6 per year, and do much less showing until the children are older.
Both Lindy and I will be available to conduct lectures, Clinics and Schools. Agistment of all categories will still be available. We will be standing our current Stallions at Stud. Spring 2006 may see the introduction to the public of our Warmblood stallion, Marena Gala Salute.
We are preparing to sell 30 acres of the best land in the Yarramalong Valley as part of our retirement plan. This land, previously used to raise our young horses, is prime agricultural land and situated well above the surrounding land. The property fronts to both the permanent Wyong Creek and Yarramalong Road. A DA for a country cottage on the land is before Council at present.
Good luck in the wonderful sport you have chosen. Maureen Walker
